On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

From Tim Woolley's Racing Site

Just wanted everyone to see this from TWR site. I was checking on Barbaro and saw this. Hope you enjoy. God bless.

Horse Angels Speaking

Barbaro must be listening a minute or two
To Horse Angels Secretariat and Seattle Slew
It is too soon to join us Secretariat said
Therefore you need now to listen instead.

Continue your healing and being patiently calm
Your positive attitude is the best healing balm
They're are saying you're smart and we have to agree
But what else should we expect with your great pedigree.

We have races in heaven and a whole lot of fun
But it is too soon to join us; your job is not done.
You will see that we all must have our own Triple Crown
Yours might be through your foals or even greater renown.

You have made safety in racing a cause celebrate
That might be your achievement at the end of your day
Or there might be another Triple Crown with you son
So even not on a course there're still races to run.

But whatever your job is, your success is confirmed
Because we know you are one of us chimed in Affirmed.
For you see we know that you are one of us and great
Even though your own Triple Crown was stolen by fate.

We'll be watching you closely to see you don't falter
While hearing the prayers offered here at our altar
For there are so many more legends with us up here
With us watching over you, you have nothing to fear.

You can also tell Mike Rea that we are all praying
So he will recover soon and restart his training
Cause we know that he loves horses and misses them too
Tell him that next time in the saddle to use crazy glue.

Hooray to Mike for removing the tummy tube. A milestone day. I check in from TWR almost every day... am humbled by how loving your family is and how generous they are replying to our comments when they have so much to do.

You are all an inspiration. I really like seeing the comments from people who have family who've had similar injuries and how they healed, just like you are, each and every day. Must feel great to have others showing the possibilities -- just like you'll be able to do some day when you are 100%.

The body is a wonderful mirace in the making, carried on the wings of beauty, born knowing how to heal itself, how to right itself and be well. You are following in the footsteps of a million miracles, and walking beside the mighty Barbaro. So be well, dear Mikey, and we'll keep cheering you on from the "internet stands" each and every day. Love to all -- Susan in Saratoga

Wonderful news about removing the feeding tube, and about visits from longtime friends.

I've been reading the updates on Mike's condition and want to add my best wishes for a smooth recovery.

Best wishes for you Mike's immediate family during this time.

I am so happy for Mike and his family. Removal of the stomach tube is a big deal and a good sign of Mike's progress.

I know how hard this has been for you Mike, but you certainly sound like a "never give up" kind of guy, and you have such a wonderful support system in that loving family of yours.

May God continue to bless you and your family. Angels are watching over and protecting you, of that I'm quite sure.

Keep up the good fight. Be well Mike. You're one day closer to going home.

To Mike and his family - You continue to be an inspiration with your faith and will to heal. Mike and Barbaro will be forever linked in my mind when I use the word "heroes". Would that we were all blessed with such a family as Mike has, as well!

Sleep well, Mike, know that you are mighty loved and admired, from both close and afar. Have another wonderful day of good surprises tomorrow... enough of that feeding tube, yeah!

Hope you are well enough now to complain about the hospital food. I check on you every day even if I don't post a comment. Take it day by day and then one day you will be back in the saddle again.
