On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

WE ARE BACK AND UP LIVE!!!!!

We finally have the internet back after so many days of worrying that we were so out of touch with all of you. I haven't read your messages yet or comments. I wanted to let everyone know Mike is doing wonderful with his recovery and making progress everyday. I took my sister, Nancy back to the airport yesterday and we are all sad she is gone. She should be back in about three weeks though. The horse race and Mustang raffle for Mike all went well. The lady who won the Mustang is from California and is on T.V. with the news or something. Nancy will be able to tell you more about that. I just know she has been putting Mike all over their news channel. Her name is Rebecca Witzman. Now back to Mike. He continues to make progress with standing and taking many steps (walking). He received a new wheel chair yesterday so he can start working on rolling himself around. He misses his family a lot and tells us constantly that he loves his wife, Rochelle. He wants to call her on the phone most of the evening and when he talks to her he is just bubbling and grinning from ear to ear. Mother did get a little bit of rest when Nancy was here. We made her stay in the hotel room and rest and assured her we would call if there was anything to let her know about Mike. So....Now I am going to go and read all of the comments and messages and I will be back to write more later. Thank you again for everything.

Dear Mike & Rea family: So happy you guys are up again LIVE...we think of you and will pray for your continued healing recovery in Saturday's upcoming vigil at 7 pm EST. We lit several candles for you and Barbaro at www.gratefulness.org. It's a great site for quiet moments when you get to rest from ALL THAT REHAB WALKING THERAPY. Barbaro is staying strong with you. Thought you and your family would enjoy our Barbaro's Recovery Road II (as you are featured in the poem too). Take care and continue to mend..Barbaro sends his best wishes with nods, bows, and his famous wink. Soon, he'll be up walking like you.

P.S. Mike, now that you are moving a bit, maybe some wheel chair races are in order soon. My mom who is still recovering from multiple ankle fractures (required screws like Barbaro) sees her orthopaedic surgion Dr. Hwang later today. Maybe she can come home next week. It's been 4 weeks now, and she moves pretty good on her own steam in her wheel chair. She cannot have a walking cast yet because nurses have to check her incision sight daily seeing no infection sets in. Things are looking pretty good despite a few minor setbacks of allergic reaction to antibiotics to fight her left knee infection from cut received when she fell. Her spirits are good...and my father soon to turn 88 years-young keeps on ticking after taking a licking. Asked Dad last night if he felt 88 and he said, "nah, more like 58.

Hang in there, and those days ahead-you will walk on your own steam from your bed. Rest easy now, enjoy family, friends, and some really cold but soft icecream with those goodies on top you love so much!! Ta Ta for now, will keep in touch....Gone to light another candle for you. Can you believe it?? There are over 1200 virtual candles lit from 6 countries for you and Barbaro (including UK, USA, Canada, Puerto Rico, Norway, UK includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland)....AMAZING!!! Talking about your icecream makes me want to grab some right now in this record breaking heat in New England.

Great news that you guys are back up and running! I know how it is.

Slow and easy Mike. I know how frustrating it can be--but long term you'll get there faster. Mild pain get some gain. I'm sure you're learning that in PT.

Hang in there Mike (did you know I tell Bobby that practically every night!). Slow steady progress--SSP. That should be your new motto. But then you could be like Bobby and want to use ACN or ACD!!!--that's "another comfy night" or "day". You can use that too.

So glad you are back on-line & live. For me, a day without an update is like a day without sunshine. Great to know Mike has his "wheels" now and some independence as far as mobility goes. My father is 71, a double amputee, and like Mike, quite an inspiration. With the fantastic job Mike's doing in therapy I imagine it won't be long before he has everyone taking countless excursions with him around the hospital; just one of many milestones yet to come! It's so heartwarming to hear how Mike cherishes his nightly phone calls with Rochelle... they're truly a loving couple with a marriage blessed by God.
Wonderful news about the woman that won the mustang. That's so kind of her to give a lot of television coverage about Mike and your family. Our Heavenly Father is working through her, isn't he just amazing...knowing all our needs and providing for them before we even ask! with her help there will be an even greater outpouring of spiritual and financial support for Mike and your family. What a blessing! I'm off to light candles for Mike and your family at gratefulness.org. Will be checking in later tonite for Mike's daily update. Take care & God bless you all.
