On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

Hello Everyone

Today has been good for Mike. He did well in all his therapies and had a lot of visitors through out the day. Tonight he gave himself a shower and he had the water sprayer going everywhere. I don't mind getting wet at the end of the evening though. But he is doing his self care very well. Again I am not positively sure but Angel is coming this Sunday. It will probably turn into a very emotional day. Also his 12 year old son, Jesse is suppose to be coming with his mother and Mike's wife, Rochelle. He was at Fair Hill with Mike that morning of the accident and saw his father being intubated and flown off in a helicopter. That is the last time he has seen his father. He came to Kernan and peeped at him from the door and accidentally saw him twice, once on a stretcher going to the xray department and sitting in a wheelchair in the hall. Jesse told me he didn't want to see his dad sick and wanted to wait until he was better to see him. Now he has talked to him on the phone some. Mike home schooled Jesse last year and they were always together going to races with their horses or at races and at the barn at Fair Hill. They were inseparable. Jesse is having to go to regular school this year. So Sunday is going to be something. Of course I will let you know all about it. Everyday Mike is getting stronger and stronger. He is so determined to beat this brain injury. He tries so hard at everything he does. I am so proud of him. All the nurses come by his room and talk to him. They tell him how far he has come since he first got there. It makes Mike feel so good. They are very encouraging. The TWR site pumps him up too. If ya'll could see his face when Mother and I tell him some of the comments people write about him and oh when we read the poems to him. It would make you smile and give you goose bumps all over. But he did smile real big and even laughed about the crazy glue to the saddle. Everyone has been so uplifting to us all. We thank you so very much for everything. Well it's time to go now. God bless everyone and keep those prayers coming and those candles lit for Mike and Barbaro.

What a great day!!! I can't wait to hear about Jesse's visit. That is going to be wonderful. I am so glad he had a better day than the last couple of nights. What an ugly thing to have to listen to. I hope he can get on soon so he can see what people are saying about him. He will have a blast. God Bless you, Mike!!! I think everyone at Fair Hill is praying for you too.

I am so happy Mike is doing so well. I, too, hope that soon he can read what people are saying, and the outpouring of love and care from the people who already knew him, and the people who have come to know him through this site.

Good Morning, Mike.

It's still morning here in Arizona. I have followed your recovery through Tim and Alex's site. You have come a long way!

My daughter got thrown from our "Big Goof-ball." He is 16.2 and still acts like a two year old. (He's NOT two any more. He's just stuck there mentally... He is now 12 years old!) My daughter had a concussion and some internal injuries. Fortunately, she was O.K. and no lasting effects, other than a little anger towards the horse. She has forgiven him!

Take care and keep up the good work!

Mr. Rea and family,

I just posted a comment on TWR Barbaro's site to this same effect: my family and I just returned from a vacation to eastern Tennessee and The Smoky Mountains. While at "Dollywood" in Pigeon Forge,TN, I stopped in the chapel to enter a petition for healing for you and Barbaro.

I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers and am happy to hear of your continued progress.

Keep your spirits up. Sunday will be a very emotional and special day.

Such wonderful news to hear that Mike had a great day! I am so happy for him and for his family. Mike is showing the same strength and determination as Barbaro. What inspiration they both are to so many of us. Mike, I know you will be well soon, and back with your family where you belong. Until that day, you keep up the good fight and never, ever give up! We'll all be here continuing to root you on every step of the way! God bless you Mike and your family.

Hey Mike and Family. Have not forgotten about you. This is Wm & Cle and the rest of the Shaw clan saying very excited by the news you are coming along so well! Fantastic going Mike and keep getting stronger. When I read the poem about the crazy glue part for your saddle and rump we laughed pretty hard. Been a few times could have used it on some things around here to keep track of em better!

Been working with Debra L. In Wisconsin to add addtional bloggers sites to her website so if you or familly has a change stop in in and check out some really neat things throughout www.campaignforbarbaro.com. We are linked inside it at the Team Ambassadors sidelink bar. You can also go to http://TeamUSABarbaroLounge.blogspot.com We hope to have it up and running with Deb's main Host Site by Sunday. You can have a preliminary SNEAK PREVIEW. Lots of articles which are fun and interesting links. ENJOY and pray each day just keeps getting better and better for you.

Lit some more candles for you and Barbaro and other family members at www.gratefulness.org. The candles are virtual ones which last about 48 hours.

Mom finally came home in a wheelchair and new foot/leg cast this past week-finally after 4 weeks of rehab therapy like you.
Now, she gets it at home three times a week with a registered nurse and therapist visiting to help out Dad a bit. He's almost 88 years young and appreciates the help.

Have a comfortable weekend with friends and family. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Working on another poem for Alex Brown. When I finish it I'll post you a copy.

Another soft good bye for now until we post again...Blessings to you and yours. Wm & CLE
