On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

BABY STEPS DO COUNT!!!

Hello everyone. I have some glorious news to post. Mike is taking unassisted steps. Even though they are baby steps, that counts. Remember his recovery is like a baby learning how to do things. So in my pediatric knowledge mind my brother will be walking very well soon. He called our mother and told her that he stands up from a sitting position and is able to walk a few steps. We are elated with joy and so very excited that his balance is now slowly coming back. May God bless everyone and God speed to my amazing wonderful brother.

Mike continues with his water therapy and is helping his boys with their homework. He tries to help his wife with her household tasks and errands. He said all of the children are doing well also. They have been looking at land because Mike's dreams are to have enough land to have a barn on to house lay ups (horses recovering from injuries, ect.), maybe giving some riding lessons and also incorporating a Christian camp and helping children. Now I am sure I haven't mentioned all of his dreams, hopes, and thoughts but hopefully this will come true for him some day. We are still working on the Extreme Home Makeover nomination but have come across some rough spots. What will be, will be and we all just keep praying about it.

A Fan of Barbaro, Laurie Hammer, has wrote a poem for my brother and I wanted to share it with everyone. It is so him.

FOR MIKE REA

Uncommon love he has,
For all horses everywhere,
This man of greatest heart,
Horse trainer extraordinaire.

One day a barn he sees,
Engulfed by fire it be,
No thought for self was there,
Four horses saved by he.

For he so loves the horse,
And horses do him love,
He hears a horse's heart,
A gift from God above.

Well I just wanted to let ya'll know Mike is doing very well and is handling Barbaro's passing as well as could be expected. All of our prayers are with the FOBS also. I will keep you posted on his recovery and will post again soon. Everyone take care.

Mike is doing well and Barbaro's Legacy Lives On

Hello everyone. I hope everyone is doing well and understand that Mike is a horseman and felt as bad as he did when Barbaro was injured. Barbaro was a true champion and a fighter and no one with that spirit should have to suffer. We all know that his legacy will continue to live on and on.

Mike has continued his water therapy. He said at first he didn't feel any progress but now he can tell that it is really working his muscles. His muscles are going to get stronger and stronger. When he is strong enough then maybe some therapy riding will take place.

Well the Fans of Barbaro and my sister, Nancy are continuing their work on Mikey's Extreme Home Makeover. We have come across some obstacles concerning land but are trying to get all this worked out. Just like what the casting director/producer told Nancy, "What will be, will be." Everyone keep praying and God bless ya'll.
