On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

Mike is doing well and Barbaro's Legacy Lives On

Hello everyone. I hope everyone is doing well and understand that Mike is a horseman and felt as bad as he did when Barbaro was injured. Barbaro was a true champion and a fighter and no one with that spirit should have to suffer. We all know that his legacy will continue to live on and on.

Mike has continued his water therapy. He said at first he didn't feel any progress but now he can tell that it is really working his muscles. His muscles are going to get stronger and stronger. When he is strong enough then maybe some therapy riding will take place.

Well the Fans of Barbaro and my sister, Nancy are continuing their work on Mikey's Extreme Home Makeover. We have come across some obstacles concerning land but are trying to get all this worked out. Just like what the casting director/producer told Nancy, "What will be, will be." Everyone keep praying and God bless ya'll.

Glad to hear Mike is getting stronger! Keep it up - water therapy is some of the best out there (right along with animal therapy!!).

I'm continuing to keep fingers & toes crossed that Home Makeover will happen for you all! When it does, I'd be more than happy to take my vacation time to help out! I sincerely want to see this happen for you, Mike!!!

Much love to all - you are in my daily thoughts!

Hi Mike,
It was wonderful to see you at Delaware Park. You look so strong and determined. I am sorry there was not enough time for all of us to meet you. Rest assured you are in our thoughts and more importantly our prayers. I pray you and your family will get the home makeover. Keep up all your hard work in rehabing your injury and it will pay off for you.

It's certainly interesting in this era of multi-millionaire and billionaire horse owners that the true lifeline, the real workers--hotwalkers, grooms, foremen, exercise riders are making peanuts and getting jipped out of/underpaid bonuses/stakes. Minimum wage workers who care for these incredible million dollar+ atheletes for 12-16 hours each day 7 days a week, sometimes 24/7 for millionaires/billionaires get paid so low. A cursory look at the trainers/owners parking lot tells a far different story..... Baby boomer mentality at it's "finest."
