On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

From Fayetteville, North Carolina

Hello everyone. My daughter, Nicole drove our mother's car up last night to Baltimore. Then we drove back here. But I will be back with Mike on Sunday or Monday. Mike had an okay day yesterday. Doing all of his therapies and begging mother to help him out or just help him. The nurses say this is normal. Today he ate some pudding and drank some type of nectar. No water or ice because he can't seem to swallow thin liquids well yet. But this is still good. So mother is there by herself but has called me all day giving me updates which I will continue to give all of you. Mike thinks I have left him but mother is reassuring him that Cathy had to take care of a few affairs and was coming right back. Thank you again for all the kind messages and prayers. Even though we make big deals about these little steps, please understand that Mike still has a long road to recovery with his traumatic brain injury. All visitors are more than welcome. His childhood friend, Mike Osbourn and his family are coming up tomorrow to see Mike and visit. Great! I know Mike is going to enjoy that visit. I promise to continue to update you. Will write more tomorrow.
