On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

I am back now in Baltimore

Mike was asleep when I arrived, of course I didn't want to wake him. Mother says Mike is in the recovery part of becoming very agitate a lot. He is trying to figure out what is going on. The physical therapist's are puzzled about the lack of movement with his left arm and right leg, this criss cross problem is very rare but are hopeful it will became better. When he does talk, Mike is very coherent and made an A+ with his speech therapist today. Otherwise Mother says he has been sleeping a lot today. Tomorrow I will be able to give you more of an update after spending the whole day with Mike. I am making Mother take the day off. I'll probably have to tie her to the hotel bed. Ha! Ha!

Mike is improving- he is in the recovery stage that it is very difficult for his loved ones to be around-every other word is, "Help me" or "I need help" and it hurts to hear. Still, we were told to expect this and that the expressions of helplessness are a part of the recovery and will pass. Again, thank everyone for all of the prayers, messages, and support.

I am a daily visitor to the Tim Woolley Racing website so that I can check on Barbaro's progress. It was there that I learned about Mike Rea and his horrible accident. I pray that Mr. Rea is getting better with each and every day, and that he'll be home with his family soon. I'll continue to say prayers for Mr. Rea and family. I'm so very sorry this happened to him.
