On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

Hello everyone. Mike has done well today with a lot of talking and of course the agitation. He tried to get up during the night so we found him restrained in his bed today when we arrived. He had pulled himself to the side of his bed and was wedged in between the mattress and bedrails. Hey, sounds bad but also it's a good sign to me. Also today he told mother and I that his electrical system had to be rewired. That things were not all connected. Thank God he is beginning to figure everything out and I as a nurse see such an improvement. I told him to move his left arm and he said he couldn't. I said try Mikey. What do you know he lifted it up some. Then I told him to move his right leg and the little booger grabbed his right leg with both, yes I said both hands, scooted his left leg underneath the right leg and brought it up. So.................Today was one of those good days. We are getting use to the back and forth of good days and bad days that they say are normal and called waxing and waning. Tomorrow is the day of the meeting with the doctors to discuss Mike's progress and recovery. I will let everyone know tomorrow what they say. But no matter what is said he is still in God's hands and all of our prayers. Thank you again for all your prayers. Also remember Barbaro in your prayers.

Thanks for putting up the "other". I have been thinking of you a lot, Mike, and am glad that you are steadily making progress - although the bad days must be disheartening. You're on the right path. I hope you know how many people are pulling for you, not just around the country, but around the world.

Stay strong, Mike! I envision a day when you'll be doing what you love again, outdoors, on the back of a running horse, and I also see Barbaro rolling in a meadow of green grass.

God bless you, Mike. When I light the candle for Barbaro tomorrow, I will think of you. And I will light a candle for you also. Live strong.
