On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

I had a whole page done and lost it all. I am so sorry. I will rewrite in am. Mike is doing well. Had therapies of speech, occupational, and physical all day. He is sleeping well tonight because he is so worn out. Back in the morning. Goodnight.

I understand fully your concern about finances, I had no one on to care for my animals horses, and, cats and they all had tobegiven away.;I have nodoubt that you uunderstand the emotional loss that was for me; Ihad been able to push myself in therapy with the thought of being ableto care for them again.I cry to thisday; I have acounselor through BrainInjury Services who lived, and worked in Maryland, and, she insists hat Maryland has excellentservices far better than in Virginia.I will send her the link to this blog, and, see what she emight suggest Have youtalked with the social worker yet?> They should be able tohelp you with getting sSDI, if not I just learned of an organization which can also help. THe Maryland state /beraininjury Asociation will be aware of the e importance of rehaab, and should also be abletoguide you; This why I suggested finding a rehabcounselor they can "pull together : all thevarious groups, and, tellyou what help is available. Look around now for a support group for TBI survivors, they are wonderfully hekpful once Mike is through this crisis stage, and, I am in a financially more stable position myself I would liketoconsider starting a support group for horsemen/women who aresurvivors of brainninjuriesBecause I had had a concussion, at least one, probably two plus other whacks to the head head I thought I knew about braininjury but, learned only after my last TBI, stroke, that it is not 'just a bad concussion"
