On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

Hair Trim Today

Mike continues to do very well. Healing of his brain will take some time but he is so determined to beat this thing. He did have some confusion off and on today. But the great thing about Mike is he will tell you that he feels weird and knows he is confused at that point. The sad part is seeing his face worried, scared, and lost. Of course we explain to him anything he asks. Even if it is the millionth time we have told him. Rochelle is working on getting him passes to church, outings, and his son's soccer games. I think this would be great for him and his children. I hope they approve it. Therapies continue daily and Mike does so well in all. We realized that he is still on what they call a mechanical diet (chopped food) tonight. I told him to ask his speech therapist (she is the one who determines the changes to his diet) tomorrow about a regular diet. When he does get on a regular diet he will be able to pick from a menu the next days meal. The food is very good at Kernan and Mike eats three meals a day. He leaves nothing on the tray.

As I was walking in to Kernan today I ran into the hair dresser that had cut his hair the first time. Her name is Teresa and she was there to do some other patients hair. She remembered my southern accent and remembered Mike. I told her he really did need a trim. So when she finished with her other scheduled hair cuts she came and trimmed Mike's hair. He didn't remember her but he enjoyed his hair trim.

My sister Nancy will be arriving August 31st. Mike and I can't wait for her visit. Mike talks to her everyday and tells her to hurry up and get here. I am trying to talk her into staying a little longer this time but she says she has to get back to work. The real estate business just isn't booming right now which makes her have to work harder. So all of you have a good night and a wonderful tomorrow. Remember Barbaro and Mike in your prayers and may God bless you all.

Hi there,
I am keeping Mike and the family in my prayers. My husband had a massive brain bleed more than 4 yrs. ago and wasn't expected to live. He did survive the surgery and was placed into a rehabilitation hospital where he stayed for 2 months (all our insurance would allow). After surgery, he was an infant in an adult body - could do absolutely nothing - including eat, talk swallow whole food, control arms, hands, legs, etc. With intensive therapy and healing, he learned to speak, use hands and arms, etc. His eyesight is still poor even after addtional surgery and his balance is not good so walking is still not easy. His driving days are over. His memory has returned although he remembers nothing of the hospitalization period. We had just moved to Florida and have no family here. Needless to say, it was an extremely difficult time but God was with us through each and every moment. I still don't know why it happened but thank the Lord for the mercy He showed to us then and continues to now. It's strange to say I guess, but life now, although more challenging, is in some ways better than it was before the accident. He would not go to church before but attends regularly now.
Be encouraged - God will continue to direct your steps and bless each one of you.

Hi Mike and Rea family...Very glad to hear you are doing better eacn day and so is Barbaro though you and he have some distance to go. Alex Brown asked me to do a very special poem so here it is for you too. ENJOY and don't laugh too hard at some of the funny spots--
THE SHAWS Barbaro's HONOREES Ambassadors. Tim Woolley is having a poem contest so we thought you'd enjoy this one.

Barbaro’s Goodnight Whisperer By Cle Shaw August 22, 2006

(inspired by Bobby Jackson’s Big Heart)

From Dawn’s earliest sunbeams grazing your face,

You knew at once NBC was your new place.

Handling all kinds of setbacks - you willed your way through,

Winning America’s hearts and your Dr. Dean’s too.

Believe in Miracles and Believe in Barbaro,

Became the motto - as much as - Go Bobby Go.

Never once were you willing to give it all up,

For deep inside you knew there is a Victor’s cup.

Arabian bloodlines - our American Champion,

Goodnight whisperer prays again -“Heal our blessed one.”

Prayer vigils at seven pm with lots to do,

Before moonlit evenings graciously comfort you.

There’s no denying that Miracles beyond faith occur,

Baffles scientific genius you’re improving as it were,

When millions gather around you to send their prayers to God,

All things are possible with Faith, yet why is that so odd?

Gretchen and Roy, Michael and Peter, along with Dr. Dean,

Find there’s more “Greatness” in your heart than ever before seen.

Emotions run high - for you get under everyone’s skin,

Your Charisma and Passion will not die but would rather win.

Thankfully Compassion is not written in solid stone,

That Love beats the odds for horses we simply do not own.

Not until your presence graces - His do we understand why,

Resting your weary head on Edgar’s shoulder and you comply.

Winning over sports writers placing you in public’s views,

Sympathy cares flowing as Niagra Falls were selfless truths.

Boggles the mind thinking about generosity’s human flow,

Rises far above comprehension - our love for Barbaro.

Brightness, Intelligence, Courage are burning fires we see,

In us as we strive living for human and horse dignity.

When immeasurable hours of doctoring and nursing care are done,

There is still much healing for Barbaro in his special race to run.

Marathons are fleeting while concerns are still shining through,

Reflecting the most brilliant star lighting evening’s deep blue.

Its love light guides the goodnight whisperer to ease away the pain.

With burning hopes that will not die as new horizons awaken again.

May time fly so your bones and hoof heal quicker in stages to mend,

On the goodnight whisperer’s voice hear a song that will never end.

You’re the brightest spirit in our thoughts and prayers night and day.

Your burning desire inspires us to fight the same way.

Still - Barbaro wishes Bernadini and Bluegrass Cat Good News,

To Preakness and Haskell Winners - sporting their lucky horseshoes,

“Yahoo Jim Dandy King" - dominating one the toughest races,

“May Luck ride with you Bluegrass Cat at Travers, next of this week’s races.”

“Would have loved to see it for myself," says Barbaro beaming wide.

Bernadini tosses a look his way saying, “rather had you by my side.”

“Competitive sports with friendly banter, that’s what I love to see,”

snorts Blue Grass Cat through video cam jamming just like Bernadini.

Take the goodnight whisperer’s advice - “Reserve, conserve, then move out,”

Knickers Barbaro. “But you two better play nice at Travers - running about.

No clipping, or tripping like Afleet Alex and definitely no slipping on turns.

Last thing anyone wants to see are needless falls, heatstrokes, and burns.”

“Taking your wisdom to heart, you’re incredibly smart,” chime the pair.

“Did you know you’re now more famous than Ginger Rogers and Fred Estaire?

Somewhere we heard by spread of the word that your heroism is no fable.

Seabiscuit’s pride lives, just inside, making you better than even Clark Gable.”

And now the goodnight whisperer gives special thanks to Alex and Tim,

For humoring Barbaro’s lighter fare that makes us all laugh with him.

Swift-fleeted feet were, always there, accompanied by sharp witty mind.

Qualities so rare as a Pink Panther Gem in the horse racing world to find.

Moonlight beams now enter in where Sunlight rays once were,

The brightest evening star is never far from where Barbaro might stir.

Dreaming once again of that Kentucky Derby race seven lengths ahead,

Will be our hero’s healing grace night and day - rising and going to bed!
