Mike Rea's Recovery Info & Updates

Mike's family created this blog to acknowledge our heartfelt appreciation for all your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes since his accident. Please check back regularly for updates on his condition and recovery process. We know all of you will keep Mike and his family in your prayers!

On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

What a Difference a Few Weeks Make!

Noon couldn't get here fast enough for me today. Its been 3 1/2 weeks since I saw Mikey and I just can't believe how much he has improved. He even looks 5 years younger - I'm guessing lots of rest and TLC! Mom and Cathy had a barber come in the other day, the stitches have been long gone, he can sit up and eat real food with a fork and he smiles and talks and hugs and kisses (we did that a lot today!). Yes, he is so much better and yet still has so far to go. What a great day Mikey had today. Rochelle and her friend Doris surprised Mike with a visit too! I don't know how Mom and Cathy are keeping this schedule though. I'm barely awake as I write and I'm going to give this to Cathy so she can share some of the special moments we had today.....
Well here I go. When Nancy played the CD she brought for him they both cried like babies. So much emotion today. Mike will sometimes ask what happened to him or where he is. It's sometimes easy to forget that he does not remember a conversation or comment after only a few minutes have passed. Today after he asked what happened and I started telling him, he started crying when I said he was riding Bruce's horse, Maulde's Girl. He thought the horse was hurt bad too. We reassured him that she was fine. When I told him that I thought a man named Paul from the barn had called 911, and told them not to send an ambulance that he needed a helicopter he started crying again. During dinner he was picking at his beans. Mother told him he needed to eat his beans, they were good for him. She started singing that song: beans, beans, are good for your heart. Mike finished with the rest immediately: the more you eat, the more you fart. We all laughed so hard. This started Mike on a roll of jokes and had all the nurses laughing also. One said to Mike, you should be a comedian and Mike said, "Well if I could get paid for it I would." Mike is still having trouble going to the bathroom. Nancy told him she use to have trouble "going on demand" or in front of people. Then she had a baby and never had that problem again. We all died laughing because Mike looked at her and said, "Well Nancy, guess I'm in trouble because I can't have a baby. So it was jokes like this back and forth. The nurse asked him if he needed something for pain. First he told her no and then said wait a minute my right elbow hurts. I'm laughing just thinking about it. You would have to be there for some of them. It was like when we were younger and all four of us sitting around after dinner. All of this lasted almost an hour. Mike laughed so hard also that sometimes it looked like he was crying but he wasn't.

I just wanted to write this comment. The other night I was so overwhelmed with all the messages and comments that were coming from people who said they read about Mike on Tim Woolley's Racing site and Barbaro updates. So I found the site and posted a thank you message not knowing until my sister arrived that Mike was mentioned nearly everyday. I stayed up last night until 3am reading all the posts. When I came to the posts about people being upset that it was Barbaro's site and not any body else's and were arguing back and forth about it I felt like an intruder and dummy for even wanting to post on that site. But everyone who did take up for Mike and send warm wishes, prayers, messages thank you so much over and over again. I apologize for stepping out of bounds but do wish the best for Barbaro and pray for him a lot. Enough said there.

So good night everyone until tomorrow night. God bless us all.

Hooray, another good day for Mikey! Visting here from Tim Wooley's site and I'm beginning to wonder if Mike and Barbaro have been getting together on some new medicine because they are both feeling so much better.

It's a treat to hear from family and that you appreciate all the suport sent your way. Be sure to schedule some R&R time -- it can be so tiring being at hospital.

Neurological recovery -- from those close to me who've left the docs (and vets)scratching their heads in amazement -- is still a bit of a mystery, it seems, and that leaves room for miracles. More M&Ms (I like the plain ones)

God bless you all -- a friend in Saratoga

I'm so thankful you guys had such a good day together with everyone in high spirits and enjoying one anothers company. I'm still lol about the beans! Thanks for sharing it with us. This is my first time posting but that doesn't mean Mike and all of you haven't been in my thoughts and prayers. I can relate to what all of you are going through now, "been there, done that," although my injuries weren't as extensive as Mike's. Your families tremendous support for him is such a blessing, I hope you realize that. Re: Tim Wooley's blog- all updates about Mike's recovery are so welcome, Mike is part of the Fair Hill Family and posters recognize that. I think it's harder for some to talk about. As you probably noticed, everything is discussed there, it's definitely not all about Barbaro. Best wishes to all, Lynn

Funny that you should be the intruders. I feel like I'm intruding on your space cause I don't know you and all.

I do read your blogs from time to time. And telling you how sorry I am doesn't help I suppose.

As I keep telling Barbaro its one day at a time. Don't rush and don't give up. Same applys to you.

About that icky nurse you need to get an advocate for Mike. And the hospital need to not put Mike on her rounds. Obviously she has a problem privately that is affecting her professionally.

To Mike Rea and his family/friends - you are always in my prayers. Whenever you need support, come back to the TW site - we are learning to care for each other.

I am so happy that he is doing so well - and cracking jokes.

Mike, keep healing - take it a day at a time (kind of like Barbaro) and you will recover.

We are thrilled to hear Mike is having a good day and so much laughter -- it is definitely good for the soul! Hi...It is so wonderful that Mike is doing better...Loved your post from today...the jokes, the laughter...it is all good!
You post anytime you want at Tim's.
Please, do...sometimes we get some real numbskulls who think the site is theirs! Fortunately, Alex posted some rules for proper online behavior at the site. I hope it has run off the troublemakers!
Once again, I admire the courage you all show by inviting us in to your most private moments (esp the bean moments Ha Ha)...I promise you there isn't a day that goes by
that we don't mention Mike and his family over on the Woolley website...We all consider you guys and Bobby's guys one big happy family!
I will check back in for an update...we are all pulling for Mike...I hate to hear about the tears, but that is pretty much expected with a serious head injury...

I am yet another stranger who found out about Mike on Tim's site. Though I also ride, I am not involved in the sport, nor am I really a fan of racing...But I watched the Preakness that day to cheer on Barbaro, saw what happened and have followed his recovery daily since...and now I cheer Mike & your family on as well.

Out of tragedy, heroes are born. They inspire us, move us and re-open our eyes to the importance of family, life, friendship & love.

In following the recoveries of our 2 'warriors', I have seen a side of the racing world I had not seen before & it has caused me to rethink a few of my views on the sport.

Keep up the fight, Mike and know that we send you healing thoughts as much as we do our Bobby.

Dear Mr. Rea and Family,
I am deeply sadden to read about your encounter at Tim Wooley's site. I have posted there from the start of this with Barbaro, and I can honestly say the people that come there are geniune and caring human beings.I've read about Mr. Rea and his accident and have added you to my daily prayers. I didn't want to intrude, but after reading the comments I had to say this.I hope you will come back again and just overlook whatever rude comment you may have read. This is an imperfect world, and sometimes you will run across things like that. It doesn't make it right by no means, and I don't excuse that type of behavior. What I'm trying to say in a round about way is, there are a few bad apples in every bunch. Tim and Alex work very hard to make it a wonderful place for EVERYONE to come and feel welcomed.I wish there was a way to just zap out those kind of people and their lack of respect and common sense. I truly hope you will come back again and just ignore those idots. I've been to many web sites and I can honetly say Tim's is one of the best. I will continue to keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers for a full and speedy recovery. God Bless you.

I Just Posted This On Tim Woolley’s Site and Wanted You to Know:

Incessant, infantile banter and argumentative rhetoric is suitable for chat rooms, Instant Messaging, private e-mail and telephone conversations.

My objective in visiting this sight was to glean nuggets of relevant information and accurate updates. Scrolling through such abundance of idle chatter is excessively time-consuming and I will not continue.

For those inclined to refute my statements, I rather suggest you expend your talents responding to MIKE REA’S FAMILY, who posted this comment on HIS site) Friday, July 28, 2006 at 10:19 PM:

“I just wanted to write this comment.

So good night everyone until tomorrow night. God bless us all.”

To Mike Rea’s family, I deeply regret your unfortunate experience while reading the comments here. New Bolton Center briefly provided a link (now removed) to this site, where I learned of Mike Rea’s accident. Having read the comments here during the past week, I certainly understand your disappointment with many. You have my continued prayers for Mike Rea’s complete recovery and for the meeting of your every need.

My thanks to Tim, Alex, Michael, Peter, Ricardo, Dr. Kathy Anderson, Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, all medical and support staff at NBC and the folks at Kennett Florist for your extraordinary efforts.

I'm hoping the weekend is going well for Mike and all of you.

I wanted to apologize for the few "misguided" people on Tim Woolley's site (postings on Barbaro). You most certainly are part of the family and welcome at any time!

I know the stresses and strains that you are under right now and it was out-of line.

I've been keeping up the good "mojo" for Mike since I learned of his accident. And, I'm keeping that same energy up for you all, as well. Like Barbaro, I hope Mike makes a full recovery and walks out of the hospital as soon as possible! From reading your updates, Mike's got a fire in him - and that's a good thing!

Keep fighting, Mike!

Warmest Regards,

Julie Z.

Tim's site with Barbaro updates >IS< Mike's site too. How could anyone separate Mike from Barbaro?
"When two hearts, as one unite...the yoke is easy, the burdon, light."

A good part of the strength and character in Barbaro's great and fighting heart was enhanced by his being trained by Mike. Barbaro is so willing to do everything that his people ask him to do...even to be compliant while enduring great pain. This is testimony to good training, and to the bond that the two great hearts have. Those hearts are Mike's and Barbaro's.

Tim's site is a place for people who share their hearts with "all-things-Barbaro",can go. Barbaro would not have become his complete, great self without Mike. We love and pray for you too, Mr Rea.

Bless you, Boys. God has a plan and a destiny for the both of you.

To Mike and his family.

I have enjoyed reading your blog on Mike's recovery ever since Alex provided a link to it. I admire your courage, Mike's courage through all of this. I laugh at the good and funny posts, and cry when I see he had a rough day.

I truelly understand the struggles he goes through. My older sister had a injury similar to Mike, this was 20 yrs ago. What tough times, but today she is healthy, happy.. and don't tell her this, I like the person she is after the accident. lol..

I also am in a battle with cancer, and it is so great to see the support team Mike has. We from Tim's site, now feel as though Mike is now part of "our family" we have there.

I too check each morning, and each evening to see how "bobby" is doing, and then come to see how Mike is doing.

Keep up the great job of updatein us!!

Give Mike a Hug and tell him we all love him, and wishing him the speedy way to heal.

Mike, Keep positive & recover - think little *can does* each day! ... Am so happy you heard our FINDING A FOLKHERO IN BARBARO. Miracles COME in many forms!!! Longevity & prayers worked a miracle for him! No Limping, HE WALKS, RUNS, and SPRINGS tonight, no joking... You'll get there too!

www.campaignforbarbaro.com is asking SPRINGTIME to contribute to both Barbaro's & your recoveries.

Here's a song from the "CELTIC WOMAN"(CD)-these 5 ladies are incredible & sang here in New Hampshire for their 1st US tour of America March 14, 2006. Their performance of "You Raise Me Up" inspired us to leave you for now with another song they sang...

Title: The Soft Goodbye

'When the light begins to fade -
And shadows fall across the sea -
One bright star in the evening sky
Your love's light leads me on my
way -

There's a dream that will not
sleep -
A burning hope that will not die -
So I must go now with the wind -
And leave you gracing on the
tide -
Time to fly, Time to touch the
sky -
One face alone with a haunting
cry -
One song, One star burning bright
Let it carry me through darkest
night -

Rain comes all over gray hills -
And, on the air is soft goodbye
Hear the song I sing to you -
When the time has come to fly -

When I leave and take the wind -
And, find the land that fades
away -
The brightest star in the evening
sky -
Is always never far from me...

The brightest star in the evening
sky -
Is always never far from me!'

(The Soft Goodbye by David Downes, C. Ni Dhubhghail, D. Agnew, & B.McCrea)

Maybe a family member can pick up a cy at Barnes & Nobles. Believe its featured there in their music selection.

For now, Barbaro's New Hampshire Ambassadors will leave you with warm thoughts for a bright day and evening. See yourself recovering in your mind, Mike. You are not alone in this. Carole is recovering from major jaw transplant surgery from a nasty accident which broke her jaw. She recovers with you & Barbaro each day better too!!! A soft goodbye for now to you all, God Bless!

Hi Rea Family, It is me, again, Pamela...I hope your night is going well...Just lay back, Mike and enjoy the time off...you will be back before you know it...
What do you do during the day? I assume that you have therapy and the like...oh, I know it is boring, but it is so important that you hit it hard and fast...Just like the wonderful man we know you are...I would like to hear about your hobbies, but I imagine that you are far too busy for that.So I would happily settle for a horse story or two...
Sleep tight, now, Mike...I am thinking of you every day. I know you will make it...sure it will be rough...but you can do it...I know you can.
Good night Mike...sweet dreams...

Bless and heal Mike, and to his family we extend our heartfelt best wishes for a strong and steady recovery. Life sure gives us challenges and it's difficult to imagine why we have to face such pain. With all the anxiety and desire to help evident on the TW site, personal style sometimes gets in the way of the overwhelmingly positive energy, but I know that Barbaro and Mike's recoveries are irretrievably connected and the healing energy is working for both. Please do not let a few moments of rancor dissuade you from accepting the positive vibrations for Mike and his family. I hope you will come by frequently.

Humor is a wonderful immune booster and healer, and family jokes are the best! Thank you for sharing them, it lightens the load and lets us laugh with you. Someone asked if you could bring the dog, and I have to add that when my husband was in the hospital with lung cancer my visits with our Great Danes were very important to him.

Please give Mike a big hug and greetings from Northern California - his fan base is growing by the minute! Get well, heal!

To Mike & Family,
A big "How do" from Jen in Iowa. I learned of Mike's accident because I check the Barbaro news on Tim Wooley's site first thing in the morning (4 am), noon & night(right before bed), and about 20 times in between. That very special horse's struggle for life has also help shed light on Mike's injury, and in turn.... on you all. See how magically he is!!

Now I come to your site too and have added Mike to my prayers. I wanted to say you guys (Mom & sisters) are "steel" supporting your brother. Mike is one lucky guy in that respect and family is everything. There is nothing I wouldn't do for my brother and you guys show that fierce affection in the descriptive blogging of Mike's hurdles, your resolve & love and his gradual recovery.

Hang in there Mike - you've got a devoted family and hundreds of Barbaro fans out here pulling for YOU too. To Mom, sisters, Mike's wife & kids, stay strong - sounds like Mike has a strong will and he will want to get out of that bed. :-) I will keep praying for you!! Can't wait until your computer problems are solved and we can get an update!

I think of Mike daily and hope his recovery is speedy and full. And, to Mike's family: I hope you all are taking care of yourselves. Not only does Mike need your strength, you need to keep up your energy and health to make it through. I learned that lesson the hard way - so please take care of yourselves, too!!

Have a good night - will check in again tomorrow.
