On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

The Early Years....

We have received so many requests for pictures of Mikey, his horses, and his early life. Mother has an old blue footlocker full of pictures and momentoes she has cherished forever! We have all been told once or maybe a million times, that if there was ever a fire not to worry about anything else in her home but that blue footlocker! Mom went home for a few days recently to pick up Dryefuss, her dog. The first and only time she has left Mikey since the accident. During that short time at home, she went through that footlocker and sent me a number of pictures to scan, save and post. Waiting for snailmail - ugh! Scanning, cropping and saving each picture - Ugh! Catching Mom at a time when we both have time to chronologically sort and correctly caption each photo - UGh! Trying to speak to Mom and get everything just right while she is at the hotel in Maryland with a tornado warning (which she is very afraid of) in effect - UGH! Listening to Mom as she gets on line with Cathy's laptop and views each photo for the first time (enlarged, enhanced, etc) - ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS! The new pictures are on the left side under Photo Album or right here The Early Years. I love you Mikey! And...

I BELIEVE IN MIKE REA!

Mike and family,

Thank you for the time you took to put together "The Early Years" album. I enjoyed it tremendously. Your whole family is beautiful,(inside and out). I have a question? Did,(do),any of the other family members ride? Just wondering. Keep pluggin' along, Mike.

Thanks so much for compiling the "Early Years" album. All the pics. were so heartwarming to see. I was unable to view the video for some reason but will keep trying and pray my persistence will pay off. Please, do start an Extreme Makeover petition for Mike...I know an impressive number of signatures could be gathered to make it happen! Also, if you need any help at all with organizing another fund raiser don't hesitate to reach out to the FOB's (Fans of Barbaro) at Tim's site. We support Mike and will do anything we possibly can to help him. He's not only a wonderful brother but a wonderful man. Thanks again for welcoming us into your family. You're all always in our thoughts and prayers and truly loved. God Bless each of you with his wonderful grace.

What fantastic pictures! Thanks for taking the time to put these together and share. It makes us all feel closer to Mike and his love for horses, and his love for you, his family.

We continue to pray for Mike's swift and full recovery, and for each of you as you support him in his progress. Thanks again for the "inside" look!

Mike, Your pictures are so great!! i love the one of you and your sisters sitting on top of the car. It reminds me of one of me and my 3 siblings on top of a car!! Also taken back in the day of black/white photos!! The pix of you competing, racing and winning are also very cool. You had some very wonderful times growing up with horses in your life.
