Mike Rea's Recovery Info & Updates

Mike's family created this blog to acknowledge our heartfelt appreciation for all your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes since his accident. Please check back regularly for updates on his condition and recovery process. We know all of you will keep Mike and his family in your prayers!

On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SON-BABY BROTHER-HUSBAND-FATHER

Hello everyone. Well today is the great day we all have been waiting for and praying for also. Thank God and everyone for all your prayers, faith, and just everything that we can even celebrate our brother's birthday. We are so very thankful that we are even able to celebrate this. Tears are just flowing now. Mike was so lucky and he is so blessed to even be alive.

I just got back from the Philadelphia airport with Nancy. She is so excited about today and Mother and I are so excited that she was able to be here. Mike is going to be so surprised also and everyone is going to be so overwhelmed with emotion. We have plenty of Kleenex guys. Just to let everyone know, YOU are invited to attend Mike's party tomorrow at Sunbridge Care. It is to start around 1pm. If your able to come, please do. We would love to see and meet everyone.

Mike is doing well. His brain is healing because Mike is now realizing his limitations and is fighting depression daily. It is so sad to see but love, care, and a lot of hard work from and for Mikey is helping daily. My sister, Nancy has this wonderful book for Mike to read that someone told her about in a note with a donation. It is called Fighting Back by: Georgina Colthurst. She was injured much like Mikey in June of 1977 and wrote the book about her recovery with the help of family, doctors, and friends in 1990. She showed horses like dressage and hunter. Nancy is reading, highlighting parts for Mikey and Mother, and listening to Joel Olsteen all at the same time. Ever the multitasker. But anyways Cathy is now going to bed for the Big Day Tomorrow with Kennett Florist and everyone. And yes please continue your prayers for 6 yr. old Erin, Barbaro, and everyone in need. We Believe in Miracles, We Believe in Barbaro, We Believe in Mike Rea. God bless everyone.

Happy Birthday Mike!!!

I hope you enjoy your special day. It is good to read of your progress.

I suffer from a brain infection, caused by Lyme disease. In a small way I understand some of what you are going thru. I know it has to be very hard and confusing to have your life changed so.

I know with your courage and hard work, the Love of your family, and your faith in God you will beat this.

Happy Birthday again! Enjoy your cake, ice cream & M&Ms.

Bless You and Your Family,
Cheryl O from PA

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MIKE, THE OTHER MAN IN MY LIFE!!!How I hope the happiness you feel today will remain in your heart each and every day. Always remember, there's a circle of love surrounding you that keeps getting bigger and bigger - it started with your family coming together, then your friends and community... and now you have the prayers of a whole nation and probably some parts of the world. You are a lucky man, but most of all you are blessed! Love, Mercy

Happy Birthday Mike! This is the first time I've posted to you in your blog, but I've been keeping up with your daily progress since day 1 - thanks to Tim Woolley and Alex Brown's web site for Barbaro.

You have a great family (as I'm sure you well know) and I pray, as they do, for your full and speedy recovery. May God's light shine on you in the coming days!

OK, you eat TONS of cake, ice cream and M&M's - you only celebrate your birth once a year and that's the day to LIVE IT UP! As a matter of fact, maybe you should do what I do and have a birthday month! Very fun!

Take care and know that you and your family are continuously in my thoughts. Much Love,

Linda R in Nebraska

Happy Birthday, Mike!

I know Barbaro has whispered this in your ear: Believe in Miracles! There are a lot of people pulling for you.

Enjoy your day. ACN. And every day you will move closer to where you want to be, even if there are times when it doesn't seem like it.

You have so much courage! You're a true Thoroughbred, just like Bobby.

Mike, I'm posting again because I received this in an email today and I had to share it with you. My birthday is around the corner so I'm getting emails with the b-day theme...

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay "them "

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9 Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Happy Birthday Mike!

So I came in to check on Barbaro and then there was this announcement in the update section and I just had to stop by and wish the happiest of birthdays. I know it isn't much fun being away from home but by now you must have had some really great surprises.
