On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you

There is just no way we could possibly thank the almost 1000 people so far that have signed Mike's petition for Extreme Home Makeover. We will always be so very grateful to you all. We all have been extremely busy lately. My Mother went to her home in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She really needed to go home. She is totally exhausted and has been here since the day of Mike's accident on June 16th. As you know my sister Nancy is in South Carolina working and trying to sell houses and still keep up with all Mike's administrative and financial things. So now I am here by myself and taking care of Mike. Of course Mother and Nancy are on the phone with me a lot every day and night. Nancy is still working on a paper petition for people to take to race tracks and every where. Hopefully before the weekend is over Mercy and her will come up with something. But please keep working on getting signatures because I have a surprise for everyone.

Mike will be going to his home next Saturday to stay. Yes that is what I said. We are all very surprised ourselves. No his home can not accommodate him and no a lot of people, nurses, and doctors don't think he is ready but they are going to release him Saturday next week. Sunbridge physical therapy said there is nothing more that they can do for him. Kinda like their saying he has plateaued. He thought he was going home today but the doctor said, "NO!" Thank God. Mikey has been wanting to go home since he could talk in Shock Trauma. When he was in Kernan he would beg us to take him home everyday, several times a day. He continued at Sunbridge also. We all know this is what he wants but just don't think it is the best thing for him right now. I have talked until I was blue in the face and told him he would have a lifetime at home when the time was right. Since the doctor didn't release him he will still gone home for the overnight visit tomorrow but be back Sunday. I really think that he'll go home and they will see and comprehend that Mike didn't just fall off a horse and get hurt, but that he fell off a horse and has a traumatic brain injury which is going to take a lot of time healing. Mikey just asked me again for the hundredth time tonight before I left, "Cathy, why can't I walk still?" I have explained it to him several times, but see he can't remember. Some days he has very bad memory loss. Some days if he is tired or stressed he slurs his words and is so very off balance it scares me. But friends we have done all we can about this. So next week they are going to do what they call restorative therapy. An aide from what I understand will take him on walks with his walker and he has to show them that without physical therapy he is not going to regress. I guess if he regresses bad they might keep him. Who knows!!

So I got him this cool walker that he has to get use to. It's blue and on wheels. It has hand breaks and hand locks to lock it. It also has a seat so he can sit down when he gets tired. He has to use the wheelchair most all the time. The walker is really just for exercise and physical therapy. I really got it for him to use upstairs instead of crawling around on all fours. Plus when he gets out of the shower he will have something to sit on while drying off, brushing his teeth, shaving, ect.. There is no room for the wheelchair upstairs and it is very heavy to carry up the stairs. They (Sunbridge) did say if he finds that it is just not what he thought it was going to be like he could come back. Also if he starts regressing badly, he may go back. We just don't want him to fall and get hurt and end up back in the hospital. So everyone pray he'll be safe at home. Please. I pray for God to wrap his arms around him 24/7.

I think I remember telling ya'll the reason that Nancy wanted to do this petition is because it appears you get better results with being nominated for the Extreme Home Makeover show. She got the 50,000 from there also. We are going to continue to also have fund raisers for Mikey and his family. We know for a fact that he will be unemployed for a year or more. The one good thing is Mike does have an appointment with his neurologist Thursday. I can't wait to see what he has to say about everything. This will be his first visit since he left Kernan. I will keep ya'll informed. I promise.

Well it is time for me to go now. I hope everyone has a great weekend. God bless everyone over and over again. Thank God for Barbaro doing so well also. He really has helped Mike so much and so have the Fans of Barbaro. We will be forever grateful.

It is really good to hear that Mike is getting "his way" in going home. Cathy, I know it is going to be a rough go for you, and Rochelle and Mike once he does get home. I am hoping the neurologist has good news for you guys also. It will undoubtedly be very stressful for quite a while trying to get all in order for him to even be "home" at home. it will be so foreign to him with his disabilities as of now. I pray the petition comes through and the remodeling happens, and soon. It will no doubt help Mike's self-esteem even more, if he can navigate in his own home better. I think of all of you often. I know how hard it is and how long the road still is to go--I pray for it to become a small hill ever geting smaller every day for all of you!

WOW!!!

I'm so glad Mike is getting to go home! It will do so much for him, in the healing process.

Cathy and Rochelle, I know how exciting and scary this is for you. It's going to be hard, but the love and dedication you have shown throughout will perservere! It's going to be OK!

Will pull my address book out to find people to sign Mike's petition. I've had several do so, so far. I want to see this happen for you all. You are such wonderful, deserving people! And, you know, when we Fans of Barbaro set our minds to something, we don't ever give up!! :o)

All of you, take care. You all are so truly special! And, please give Mike a hug for me! (Sent him a card last week hope he got it and enjoyed it).

Hugs to you all!

I'm glad your getting to go home. But I too worry that this is not quite the right thing yet.

Please don't dispair Mike. You have the most loving family ever. From reading all the blog's you can tell how much they care for you.

I know it isn't perfect but have you thought to put a bed on the main floor for Mike so that he doesn't have to climb stairs when he isn't able to. Sometimes may worse than others.

Cathy so good to hear your news about Mike coming home to stay! There are many helping hands out here in spirit. Somehow it will sort itself out -- remember to take care of you, too.

Mike -- congratulations. You have worked so hard for this. I have 1st hand stories of people surprising therapists and docs by going way, way beyond when the were told they had plateaued. So keep believing in you, we do. Cheers, Susan in Sararoga

To Mike and family,

I have laughed, hoped, prayed, and shared your triumphs and frustrations. I will continue to pray that God keeps you safe at home.

Caretaking is not easy, I hope everyone rests when they need to, and asks for help when they need to.

Please take it easy, Mike, so that your recovery does not become a "one step forward, two steps back" pattern.

Good luck to you all.
