On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

A Good Day

Good evening, Mike has done well today. They changed his p.o. antibiotic to I.V. because they think it was causing him stomach problems. Mike continues to have to eat thickened pureed foods and thickened honey based water, tea, and apple juice. But he downs most or all of it. They have almost stopped the tube feedings completely at night. If he doesn't eat well they will give him a can or two during the night. He tells us his legs hurt. Yes, both legs. The right leg is moving some and PT is working him out hard. His left forearm is also moving some, but it is the shoulder that keeps him from using the upper part of his arm. It is fractured from a fall 3 to 4 months ago and probably this fall didn't help it either. Mike talks and tells you stuff most of the day. Most of it makes sense and sometimes it doesn't. Today he was worried about Baby Gracie not getting enough milk and Hunter playing. This is his two youngest children. I reassured him they were fine and I was sure Baby Gracie was getting enough milk since she is totally breast fed. They increased his blood pressure medicine just a little bit today to get his blood pressure to a normal reading. So we will continue through the week and praise him for his progress. Oh, we started watching the Life Time movie but Mike fell asleep. It wasn't as good as last nights one. It didn't hold mine or his attention to well. My sister, Nancy will be here the 27th. I can't wait so she can see how much he has improved since she was here last. Well good night everyone. Take care and God be with us all.
