On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

Go to : http://www.equestnetwork.com

Please everyone go to the web site above and see the article on Mike. The creator of this web site called Nancy and received permission to write everything. I am going to copy it and send it to Mike so he can read it. I have been printing out his messages and sending them to him since I have been back. His petition for his Extreme Home Makeover is almost at 3,000 signatures. WOW!!! I know the end date was 11-15-06 but we're still getting signatures and we are still going to send them to ABC. The Equest article is also going too. Mike called my sister Nancy today. I think he is taking turns calling us. Remember he had just called Mother and I the other day. We passed on his messages to Nancy just like she passed them to us today. Nancy said she thought his speech was slurred/mumbled. But he had been up all day and had been to church also. When he is tired his speech does this. The children and his wife were out running errands. Mike doesn't go with her like he was because it was causing him to be extra tired. I think his physical therapist told him the same. He needs more rest than he was getting. Plus using the walker all over the house instead of the wheelchair is probably very exhausting too. Mike says he loves his therapy though. He goes three days a week. Sometimes all three together, or two days together, skip one and then the third. He said he likes it when he has breaks between the days to rest. All in all I hope and think things are going alright for him. We wants us to wait on visiting him so I don't know when we will go visit him right now. As long as he calls I think I can wait for awhile. Of course he is still having his highs and lows, ups and downs, but he is hanging in there strong. We try to keep him encouraged. He asked Nancy about Barbaro and wanted to know if he would go south to Florida with everyone. She told him didn't know but would find out. A long time ago Mike use to go to Florida with the horses. This was before he had a family. Since he was married and had children he has stayed in Maryland during the winter months.

Remember to go to the Equest web site and if you haven't signed the Extreme Home Makeover Petition please do for Mike. Thank you and God bless you all.

Hi, Mike, Cathy, Nancy, & REA FAMILY

QUADRUPLE WOWS for the really awesome life story written about Mike at www.equestnetwork.com. Need to reread it as it really touched my family's hearts and souls.

Dad used the horsewhisperer's touch and ways to deal with unruly stallions that they would get at their farm sometimes in Hilltown, PA.

He recounted some of those stories telling me how as a young boy he would sleep in the barn with the newbies brought in for training.
But your life's story just takes my breath away. Tears are streaming down right now just to let you know how inspirational your life has been and still very much IS! Each day progress is made another YES, Lord and THANK YOU cross my lips. (reference to Carole here)

Pray each night that abc homemakeover's team will also open their own hearts to your needs and that they will help. If we can find an email address to email them will do that and it is so important to that you guys also send them a video clip too!

Every bit helps. And our family is
so proud of just how far you have come. Barbaro wishes a big Happy
Thanksgiving from his stall to your place. BOTH heros have so much to thankful for and as we hold a prayer vigil this Saturday for
Barbaro on November 25th from 7-9pm EST, you MIKE WILL BE THERE TOO IN OUR THOUGHTS and PRAYERS!!! May God
continue to richly bless you and meet your daily needs.

Our Mom is getting on better too. Her shattered leg (repaired exactly the same way as Barbaro's) has stopped swelling and now she can walk better without crutches. She says she can now feel where the screws and titanium plate are and the intensive daily therapy is starting to give rewards. She no longer tires as much but still has to use the walker with her aircast on. At least the plaster casts came off about the same time as Barbaro got his off on November 6, 2006.

Well, got to go finish putting some rocks back on a four-foot high stone wall that blew apart from the tornados and heavy downpours hitting New England last Friday. Luckily all my family in PA was safe from the storms and nobody was hurt here.

This reconstruction stone project will take longer than anticipated as I am still recovering from another reconstructive surgery of my jaws/sinuses which were severely damaged during an icestorm last Christmas. Hopefully by summer 2008 will have my jaws fully reconstructed and newly built teeth.

Like you, am reaching BEYOND BROKENESS now in the healing process. What a team we all make!!!

This is my Thankgiving gift for you and everyone:

STRENGTH & FAITH: He still moves stones by Max Lucado

An example of faith was found on a wall of a concentration camp. On it a prisoner had carved the words:

I believe in the sun, even though it doesn't shine,

I believe in love, even when it isn't shown,

I believe in God, even when he doesn't speak.

I try to imagine the person who etched those word. I try to envision his skeletal hand gripping the broken glass or stone taht cut into the wall. I try to imagine his eyes squinting through the darkness as he carved each letter. What hand could have cut such conviction? What eyes could have seen good in such horror?

There is only one answer: Eyes that chose to see the unseen.

For me, he is the same God who moves the stones in men's hearts to change things for better and good for all!

Matthew 11: 28-30
Come to me, all of you who are tired and have heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Accept my teachings and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit and you will find rest for your lives. The teaching I ask you to accept is easy; the load I give you to carry is light.

Our prayer for you and Barbaro is that you both continue to teach us humbleness and trusting love! You both are the best in our book & like to believe God's Book of Life.

Love in Him,

William & Carole Shaw
