On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

No Wheelchair

Hello everyone. I’m going to try to fix something that my sister, Nancy accidentally posted about Mikey on Dec. 30th, 2006. First off we don’t talk to Mikey that much anymore. It is very tiresome for him to talk on the phone and his family is always so busy doing things. Nancy didn’t realize that Mikey wasn’t using his wheelchair anymore. From what Mikey has said tonight, he hasn’t used his wheelchair for about a month now. What wonderful news to hear that he doesn’t use the wheelchair at all. We are so sorry for posting incorrectly. I myself from being in his home know it was very hard to maneuver in the house with a wheelchair and it was also very hard to get the wheelchair in and out of my car for Mikey. So knowing this I think it pushed Mikey to use his walker more and more. Plus his physical therapy, prayers, and God all have a lot to do with this also. It has always been known to us that Mikey pushes himself hard and is trying so hard to make a full recovery. He told me that he uses a cane with little legs on it mostly, especially in his home. Then he uses a walker when out and about. It has been 6 ½ months now since his tragic accident and he has come so far that I don’t think he even realizes it himself.

Again I have to thank everyone so much over and over again. Please continue with your prayers and thoughts for Mikey. God bless everyone.

Great to hear Mike's progress in walking with the cane and walker. Considering what happened, 6 1/2 months is not that long. He has made amazing progress. It is a slow process. God is strengthening all of you.

So glad to hear that the wheelchair is no longer part of the picture. Mike is truly remarkable in how he has faced this entire challenge! I hope he can feel the love of all us "strangers" who do care.

He may not know it, but he is an inspiration in a similar way to Barbaro - in just keeping on with the race and the fight and doing it with dignity and courage. Bless each of you for how you have helped him. And best wishes for 2007 to be a wonderful year for the entire family.
