On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

Everyone's so Excited

Hello everyone. Well I am enjoying one of my glorious days of rest and thought that I would update you on Mike and us.

Mike is so excited about Barbaro's Birthday Celebration events that will be happening at the end of April. He said he'll be glad to get out and about and see his old and new friends. He is especially excited about meeting the Fans of Barbaro that helped push him daily and encouraged him to keep on getting on with his recovery. With the help of all their prayers, well wishes, and God, I really do believe that Mike is where he is at today in his road to recovery. This event will be even more encouraging for him and I think it will also help him.

Of course Mother, Nancy and I are all so excited for a lot of reasons. First and foremost to see Mikey. We want to see him using that cane and how much he has improved since we left Maryland. Then of course to see Mike's wife and the children. I know the baby had just started taking steps when I left. Then to see all of Mikey's friends that we had met during our stay there. Finally to meet and help the Fans of Barbaro celebrate his birthday and what a great champion he was and still is.

I talked to Mikey the other day before I went to work so it was a short conversation. He was very tired because he had just returned from a church men's group retreat. I want to say it was for three days but I'm not sure. He says it was very good for him but tiring for him. I can't wait to pamper him like I use to do. Well just a little bit. Mike is still using his legged cane while out and about and then just the regular cane around his home. He finally did admit to me that he does fall sometimes. He says he lands on his bottom though and hasn't hurt himself. I know that God is watching over him and saved his life for something very important.

Well it is time for me to go now but I want to continue to thank everyone for all their prayers and for everything that you have done for my brother. May God bless each and everyone of you.

What great news that Mike can join the Friends of Barbaro in April! Mike is a shining star of inspiration and it seems like he has inspired us as much as the other way around. Please send Mike good wishes on continued progress and comfort, and a hearty welcome to Spring!

Mike: Just read on TWR that you went for a ride today - I am ecstatic for you....The news made my heart soar - I have horses, have been hurt badly and know a little bit as to how it felt to be back in the saddle again, after all you have been through. Congrats. I am so happy for you.

Look forward to saying hi to you at the celebration at Del Park.

Hi Mike:
I'm sorry I won't be near any of the celebrations next month. I would've loved to meet you. Maybe next time I'm back east.

Last fall I found a walker (actually their called rollaters when they have brakes)was really useful for balance and for taking weight off my aching knees. I pass this on because that might be helpful for Mike. It has a built in seat for when he gets tired.

The canes that have 4 legs on them are called quads. And they are also very very stabling for balance. A bit slower than the walker but its all about balance and what the person can do.

I consider my rollater to be my walking buddy.

I'm thrilled to hear the great news that you're continuing to improve, Mike! I can't tell you how happy it made me to read that you've now been back on a horse and that you'll be attending the Barbaro birthday bash at Delaware Park. I won't be able to make it back from Colorado for the celebration, but I'll be there in spirit. My mother, Carole Bailis, will be there in person, so when she comes by to say hi, she'll be speaking for both of us!

All the best,

Matt Bailis

Nancy,
Sorry it has been a few days since I got back to you. I haven't had time to do much on the internet lately. I found a web site for Praying Hands Ranches, it is http://www.prayinghandsranches.org.I thought you might like to go to their site and see what they do, mission, etc. I haven't had a chance to talk to them yet, but will try to this week. Their contact information is on their website too. I thought they were affiliated with the Catholic church, but found they are Christian non-denominational. More later.
