On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

Mike Continuing to Improve

Hello everyone. Sorry it has been awhile since the last post and update. I have been working those dreadful 12 hour shifts at the hospital. They are the night ones (7pm to 7am) and they completely just drain me.

On a better note we talk to Mikey by phone occasionally and he continues his water physical therapy which is to improve his balance and ability to walk. They have now given him a conventional cane to use in his house. He still has to use the cane with the prongs (3 or 4) when he is out and about. Mikey has told me how he'll walk around the rooms in his home close to the walls to see how far he can go without catching on to the wall for balance. Then he'll give me this silly laugh like he is doing something secretly. You would have to hear him to get the jest of it.

My mother, sister and I are trying to make plans on going to Maryland soon. Mikey of course wants us to wait until he is fully recovered but only God knows when that will be. So we're working on something that will tie in some other things too.

We still are so appreciative for everything everyone has ever done for my brother. Please continue with your prayers and thoughts. May God bless each and everyone of you.

Mike's family needs to read Bob and Lee Woodruffs book "In An Instant. His brain injury was different than Mikes but there are other similarities you could relate to. It is just a great book.

Hi,

Wonderful news to read...I keep
thinking of Mike and his journey towards a complete recovery.
I am extending an invitation.....
the Barbaro birthday celebration on April 29 at Delaware Park (grove).
I would donate 2 tickets for him and his wife.
Just let me know so I can request 2 more tickets. I think it would be great!
