On June 16, 2006, Mike was doing what he loves most in the world~training a race horse! One minute, friends saw him go by at a full gallop. Thirty minutes later, he was found unconscious and barely breathing. Mike endured an emergency helicopter ride to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit where doctors determined he had suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in ICU in critical condition. After three weeks, Mike was transferred to Kernan Rehabilitation Center, then Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. He returned home in October ‘06 and continues to work on his recovery. We have experienced much hope and joy as we have witnessed Mike's miraculous journey towards recovery. Mike IS A MIRACLE (the exact words of his neurologist) and continues to surprise his health care providers. Mike faces each day with courage, faith and perseverance; his new job consisting of physical therapy and theraputic riding. Mike is currently undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is experiencing great progress! FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ASSISTANCE, A "MIKE REA RECOVERY RELIEF FUND" HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO HELP WITH MIKE'S MEDICAL AND DAILY NEEDS.

Continuing the Barbaro Effect!!!

What a weekend!! Will we ever forget it or get over it? No, we will remember it forever. Mikey was so overwhelmed with every aspect of this weekend. I know for a fact it has jump started his determination to become even more than he thought he could be before this weekend. He was already so strong willed and determined to beat his brain injury but now after hearing so many encouraging words and feeling the power of everyone he was around and how much they really cared about him has given him a new perspective and has even made him more determined.

Mother, Nancy and I want to thank everyone for all their support and beautiful comments. We always thought the Fans of Barbaro were something else but now we know that you are all great people. You all have helped to keep us going strong with Mikey's recovery. God bless each and every one of you.

I know when Mikey got up to speak he was so overcome with emotion that it was hard for you to understand. So Nancy asked him to tell her what he said so she could post it on TWR's site for everyone. She did post it on he discussion board but I am going to post it hear for ya'll also.

Mike's comments: "It is an honor and privilege to be here as a part of Barbaro's celebration. I would like to thank the FOBs for being my friend. And I would like to thank Tim and Alex for including me on their website so that everyone could come together. Thank you all for your prayers and support - most of all for your prayers."

Again I want to thank everyone for all their support and prayers. Hopefully we will all get back together again soon.

WE BELIEVE IN MIRACLES
WE BELIEVE IN THE MIRACLE THAT IS BARBARO
WE BELIEVE IN THE FANS OF BARBARO
WE BELIEVE IN MIKE REA

Mike and family,

Wonderful to see you at Del Park.
We're all praying for you. Makes me think of a Reba Rambo song..

"Let the weak say I am strong, Let the sick say I am healed. With words of faith confess it, and in the name of Jesus claim it. Because what you say is what you get."

Mike...you must claim it often.
What a miracle.
God bless you and your family.

Mike and family, you all looked radiant on Sunday at Del Park! I was thrilled you could be there and share that special day.

We were all overcome with emotion just like you and so proud of what you have done, and how strong the force of Barbaro.

Mike, I don't bet much at the races, but I'm betting you will have more miracles every day. May all your dreams come true!

Love to all, Susan

So good to hear what you said to the FOB at the celebration. I just heard about your beginning to ride again the other day--it must be great to be back with horses. It's hard to believe that it's Derby time again. What a year! Love, Elizabeth

Hay, Mike! You looked absolutely wonderful at Delaware Park on Sunday. I'm so sorry that I didn't get the opportunity to shake your hand and say "God bless" but you know it was a bit of a mob scene there! Brother Barbaro himself was so very proud to see you WALK in - what a gift! I was also delighted to see that you and Alex have been riding together - I actually won a $100. donation to the rescue of my choice when Alex posted a quiz for us...as I typed the answer to the question, "Who was Alex trail riding with today?" I was crying because even though I typed your name I couldn't believe you were already up on horseback again. I was thrilled to win the donation to H.O.R.S.E. of Connecticut, but even more delighted to be right....MIKE REA RIDES AGAIN!
I believe in the miracle of Barbaro's legacy and I believe in the miracle of Mike Rea!

Thanks for the comments and prayers. I am so thankful for everybody's thoughts and prayers. It give me more faith in God and His awesome way of touching everyone. I look forward to the day I can write everyone back personnally. Your feelings touch me so much and give me strength.

We're both crying through this...guys Mike may not be able to write personally but he is seeing and feeling and responding to each and every thought and prayer that you take the time to send! Love you all, Nancy

Hi Mike:
I know I'm days late checking in--jet lag was doing me in.

But I had to tell you that you saw me. I was the one standing at the entrance when you rolled in at DelPark. I said "that would be Mike Rea".

For me I couldn't hear you because of the Park's loudspeaker system. I was outside the tent behind you. So that wasn't your fault. And it was an honor to be able to visit your home turf. I'm sorry we weren't able to talk face to face.

But I had the GREATEST weekend. It was everything I could have hoped for and more.

I'm so impressed that you are getting so much better. The sky's the limit.

Mike,

I met you and your family at the Barbaro weekend. You look great, and it was wonderful to see how far you have progressed. Granted you have a ways to go, it is clear your determination is great and the possibilities have no limits. your children are beautiful, and the rest of your family is remarkable. What a nice group of people you all are.
